Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica: Victims and Charity Concerts

In Jamaica, Hurricane Melissa struck with full force, leaving at least 28 dead, according to preliminary official reports. The Jamaican Ministry of Culture announced it will organize charity concerts to raise funds for reconstruction. Reggae musicians will perform under the slogan 'Love Jamaica,' starting on November 14 in Kingston, followed by concerts in London, New York, Toronto, and South Florida. The full program has not yet been announced. Minister of Culture Olivia Grange wrote on Instagram: 'As we have done many times before, we turn to our music, our reggae, which has proven to be a healing balm and an antidote in times of trouble and distress, not just for Jamaicans, but for the world.' The Haitian government declared a three-day national mourning period starting on Sunday, following Hurricane Melissa, which killed at least 30 people in the Caribbean nation due to floods and landslides, according to civil protection authorities. The government also declared a three-month state of emergency in several regions. The hurricane also hit Jamaica, Cuba, and the Bahamas.
